Joe McBrearty appointed Interim President, AtkinsRéalis US Nuclear

OAK RIDGE, Tn.: July 18, 2024 – AtkinsRéalis, a fully integrated professional services and project management company with offices around the world, is pleased to announce the appointment of Joe McBrearty as its new interim President for AtkinsRéalis US Nuclear, replacing Jim Rugg. Jim, who has ably led our US business since he joined the company 18 months ago, is named Senior Vice-President, New Build. He will be responsible for the CANDU® MONARK development program, and for global CANDU new builds such as Cernavoda 3 and 4 in Romania and our support for the GE Hitachi SMR project in Canada, the Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP). Mr. McBrearty had been the Chief Operating Officer for AtkinsRéalis US Nuclear since May 2024 and will continue to lead the organization’s market growth, support clients in nuclear operations, process design engineering, waste management, characterization, transportation, disposition and high-level waste technologies.

Mr. McBrearty recently returned to the US following a successful term as President and Chief Executive Officer of Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL). AtkinsRéalis US Nuclear leads the Canadian National Energy Alliance (CNEA) consortium that operates CNL on behalf of the Government of Canada. In that role, he oversaw Canada’s national research program, major environmental remediation projects, the $1.2 billion modernization of Chalk River Laboratories nuclear research facility, as well as research and development of carbon-free energy technologies, cancer fighting radioisotopes and other medical therapy treatments, waste management solutions and CNL’s long-term strategy for a successful and sustainable future, “Vision 2030”.

Mr. McBrearty has more than 40 years of nuclear industry leadership experience. Prior to joining CNL he served as the Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Director for Field Operations with the Office of Science at the US Department of Energy (DOE), overseeing operations of 10 US national laboratories, and laid the groundwork for the DOE’s strategic plans for general purpose infrastructure. Mr. McBrearty served extended tours of duty in the US Navy with time on four submarines, including serving as Commanding Officer of the USS Dallas. He also commanded the US Navy’s Officer Training Command and the TRIDENT Refit Facility, King’s Bay GA. He holds a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the US Naval War College and a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Maryland.
