Record recruitment at Candu Energy Inc. Amid Nuclear Supercycle

Announcement also Marks Visit from Ontario Premier

Mississauga, ON: October 2, 2024 – Candu Energy Inc., an AtkinsRéalis company, is celebrating the addition of over 570 new employees this year, bringing the total headcount of Nuclear sector employees in Canada to over 2,000—a record headcount for the Canada Nuclear business. AtkinsRéalis now has over 5,000 global Nuclear sector employees out of almost 39,000 total employees worldwide. Ontario Premier Doug Ford visited Candu Energy’s headquarters in Mississauga today to mark the Company’s contribution to providing high-skilled STEM jobs in Ontario, including to recent graduates from the province’s universities and colleges.

“Candidates recognize the purposeful nature of our work, which is our unique selling proposition,” said Gary Rose, President and CEO, Candu Energy Inc. “The nuclear industry employs more than 89,000 people in Canada, providing 60% of Ontario’s electricity and, through our CANDU® reactors, producing cancer-fighting isotopes. We know the world needs to double power output by 2050. And as the original equipment manufacturer of CANDU technology, the only licensed power producing nuclear technology in the country and one of only six large nuclear reactor designs in the world, we are going to play a central role in that nuclear build out. Bringing Canadian excellence to bear by transforming the world’s energy and infrastructure systems is a mission that resonates with potential candidates. And we’re proud to bring them aboard in record numbers.”

Global Nuclear Supercycle

The immediate recruitment needs of Candu Energy are being driven by a global nuclear supercycle. AtkinsRéalis has forecasted demand for 1,000 new nuclear reactors during the next few decades—and introduced the CANDU MONARK™: a 1,000-megawatt reactor in 2023 to address this demand—as well as life-extensions of 19 existing CANDU reactors in the next 10 years. With expertise across both large reactors and small modular reactors, Candu Energy will be playing a central role in meeting demand. The Company is already working on projects such as the Darlington small modular reactor, which is the first in the G7, to CANDU life extension projects across Ontario, Asia, and Europe.

“As the original equipment manufacturer of CANDU technology, we have a reputation in the industry for being an employer of choice,” said Linda Laing, Vice-President, Human Resources, Candu Energy Inc. “In part, it comes from our history of leadership in the Canadian and global nuclear industry. The 85-year life cycle of a CANDU reactor, from planning to decommissioning, means we can offer candidates a secure, well-paying, intellectually stimulating, and varied career over many decades. We are fortunate to have a diverse team of people of all ages and backgrounds, who come to work every day wanting to help forge the path to Net Zero. All of it is underpinned by our purpose of engineering a better future for our planet and its people. New hires quickly discover that this is a place where we’re there for each other; and where we play and win as one team.”

Focus on Early Career Hires

Early careers programs are vital to sustain a robust workforce to service nuclear assets. Candu Energy has partnerships with several of the leading universities and colleges in Ontario, which build CANDU-based materials into the curriculum. This is in addition to Candu Energy’s engagement with McMaster University as well as University of Toronto, and AtkinsRéalis’ broader partnership with the University of Waterloo to support female graduates in STEM programs. Almost 20% of Candu Energy’s hires in 2024 are recent graduates, and 40% of them are women.
