- Preferred Vendor Agreement (PVA) will accelerate the development of refurbishments and new builds of CANDU® reactors in Korea and around the world, while reducing costs and risks.
- While 85% of the content of a CANDU reactor is domestic to Canada, this agreement extends the capacity to support global CANDU refurbishments and potential new builds.
- This is the first PVA signed between Candu Energy and a foreign supplier with agreement that Doosan Enerbility will open an office in Ontario to facilitate better coordination and support for ongoing and future projects.
- Doosan will also explore the possibility of opening a manufacturing facility in Ontario.
- PVAs build on more than $1.3 billion in purchase orders issued by AtkinsRéalis in 2024 to the supply chain; 88.5 percent of which was issued to Canadian suppliers.
- More PVAs expected throughout 2025.
Mississauga, ON: May 22, 2025— Candu Energy Inc., an AtkinsRéalis company, today announced it has concluded a preferred vendor agreement (“PVA”) with Doosan Enerbility (“Doosan”), a South Korean-headquartered, globally diversified company with expertise building power plants and industrial facilities, machine tools and automation systems, engines, bridges and construction equipment. AtkinsRéalis services CANDU nuclear reactor plants around the world, including the three out of four operating reactors at the Wolsong plant in South Korea.
“While 85% of the content of a CANDU reactor is domestic to Canada, the demand for CANDU refurbishments and potential new builds requires international cooperation to enable Canada to continue to compete around the world by diversifying our trade relationships while creating employment opportunities for Canadians,” said Joe St. Julian, President, Nuclear, AtkinsRéalis. “This agreement illustrates the strong collaboration between Korean and Canadian companies fostered by industrial cooperation and mutual business opportunities. By providing our preferred partner companies like Doosan with a stable, predictable stream of business, and simplifying the purchasing process, we will accelerate the development of reactors and refurbishments while further reducing costs and execution risk, a win-win scenario for all parties involved.”
Doosan’s preferred vendor status is based on being a trusted partner with demonstrated capabilities and a long-standing commitment to quality in providing key nuclear components, which has been crucial to Candu Energy's ability to deliver on-time and on-budget CANDU reactor refurbishments and life extensions around the world. The PVA will ensure a closer collaboration and transparency between the two parties, focusing on continuous improvement and engineering development leading to a derisked supply chain with reduced execution risk and costs, while accelerating refurbishments and job creation.
According to the agreement, Doosan will open an office in Ontario to facilitate better coordination and support for ongoing and future projects, and explore the possibility of opening a manufacturing facility in the province. This illustrates that Candu Energy’s PVAs are encouraging investment in Ontario as partner companies prepare to support the development of new CANDU reactors, expanding the Canadian nuclear supply chain of 89,000 workers. The economic impact on Ontario of the PVAs is expected to increase as more regions choose CANDU to support their nuclear ambitions.
Doosan joins eight other existing vendors with PVA status for Candu Energy:
- BC Instruments (Ont.)
- BWXT Canada (Ont.)
- Celeros Flow Technology (Ont.)
- E.S. Fox (Ont.)
- Niagara Energy Products (Ont.)
- NWI Precision (Ont.)
- Senior Flexonics (Ont.)
- Velan (Qc.)
"This agreement, like the others, will enhance opportunities for our preferred vendors in Canada’s supply chains to get involved in overseas CANDU reactor work. We are committed to positioning our Canadian suppliers to benefiting from export opportunities associated with our status as a Tier-1 nuclear nation," said Gary Rose, President, Candu International, AtkinsRéalis.
As the only technology designed, built, supplied and serviced from within Canada, CANDU technology benefits from deep and long-standing roots in the domestic nuclear supply chain. PVAs build on these relationships by allowing participating companies to be fully integrated into the design process of the next generation of CANDU reactors.
In 2024, Candu Energy Inc. issued over $1.3 billion in purchase orders into the CANDU nuclear supply chain to more than 350 companies, 88.5 percent of which was issued to Canadian suppliers.
