AtkinsRéalis appointed to South Wales’ Cynon Gateway North Project

Thursday 25 September 2025

AtkinsRéalis has been appointed by Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council to provide multi-disciplinary project services for the Cynon Gateway North Transit Corridor, a transformative infrastructure scheme that will enhance connectivity and support economic growth in the Cynon Valley.

The Cynon Gateway North Transit Corridor will be a strategically important 1.2km link road that connects the A4059 Aberdare Bypass to the newly completed A465 Heads of the Valleys Road, creating vital north-south transportation links between Llwydcoed and Penywaun to boost connectivity and reduce congestion in the towns. The project forms part of the wider regional transportation strategy to improve connectivity across South Wales, unlocking economic growth and regeneration opportunities in the Cynon Valley.

AtkinsRéalis will provide procurement support, cost estimating, project and commercial management, ecological management, and construction supervision over a five-year period, ensuring continuity throughout the project lifecycle from early phases through to completion.

James Butler, Managing Director – Project & Programme Services, AtkinsRéalis UK & Ireland, said: “The Cynon Gateway North Transit Corridor is a pivotal infrastructure investment for South Wales, addressing long-standing connectivity challenges while supporting sustainable economic development in the Cynon Valley.

“This appointment marks an important step in the progression of this vital project. We will work with the local community and draw on our expertise in both major highways and Welsh infrastructure projects to ensure this scheme meets the needs of residents and businesses for generations to come. This also strengthens our growing presence in Wales and demonstrates our commitment to delivering transformative infrastructure that serves people.”

Andrew Stone, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Service Director, Highways and Engineering, added: “The Council is committed to delivering the Cynon Gateway North Transit Corridor, a major transportation scheme that presents solutions to the significant traffic challenges for communities in the north of the Cynon Valley. I’m pleased that AtkinsRéalis has been appointed to the project team, and I’m looking forward to working closely with them to deliver this strategically important scheme.”

Instrumental to AtkinsRéalis’ appointment was its highways expertise from major schemes including the Banwell Bypass and M5 Junction 10, complemented by a strong Welsh project portfolio including procurement strategy and risk profiling for Cardiff Cross Rail, project management for the A4119 Dualling and Tywyi Valley Active Travel route, as well as complex engineering design and delivery of Cardiff Canal Quarter.

AtkinsRéalis was appointed via the South East Wales Technical and Professional Services Framework.
