AtkinsRéalis Partners with Optaric to Accelerate Smart Glasses Solutions for the Nuclear Sector

Wednesday 14 October 2026

London: 14 October 2026 - AtkinsRéalis, a world-class engineering services and nuclear company, has announced a partnership with enterprise smart glasses company, Optaric, reinforcing its commitment to developing digital solutions that support the safe, efficient and effective delivery of nuclear projects and operations.

Marvin Johnson, Head of Extended Reality, Nuclear, AtkinsRéalis, said: "As nuclear programmes grow in scale and complexity, the industry must embrace technologies that help workers perform tasks safely, efficiently and with the right information at their fingertips. Our partnership with Optaric reflects our commitment to helping shape the future of nuclear delivery through practical innovation.

"Wearable technology has the potential to transform how information is accessed, shared and captured in the field. By combining AtkinsRéalis' nuclear expertise with Optaric's technology capabilities, we can build the evidence and confidence needed to support wider adoption across the industry."

The partnership will establish a joint development and validation programme focused on accelerating the development, testing and validation of enterprise smart glasses designed for use in nuclear and other safety-critical environments. By bringing together AtkinsRéalis' expertise in nuclear operations, human factors, radiological protection, engineering, cybersecurity and digital innovation with Optaric's enterprise smart glasses capabilities, the programme aims to demonstrate how these technologies can be deployed safely and effectively across the nuclear lifecycle.

Initial development activity will focus on three priority use cases: Remote Expert Support, Records Capture and Digital Work Packs. These applications are intended to help frontline workers access trusted information, connect with specialists and capture digital records at the point of work, supporting safer and more efficient delivery.

As nuclear programmes expand around the world, operators and project developers are increasingly looking to digital technologies that can help workers access information more effectively, improve collaboration and increase productivity in complex operational environments. Smart glasses have the potential to support these objectives while enhancing safety and maintaining the high standards of assurance required within the nuclear sector.

The programme will evaluate applications across the full nuclear lifecycle, including new build, commissioning, operations and decommissioning. It will assess a range of factors critical to deployment in nuclear environments, including human factors, PPE compatibility, hands-free interaction, cybersecurity, information assurance, connectivity and sovereign hosting requirements.

Dr. Chris Parkinson, CEO, Optaric added: “AtkinsRéalis stands out for the maturity of its vision. Rather than asking what XR might do in the future, they are focused on how smart glasses can be safely and securely deployed today to improve frontline operations. For Optaric, this partnership is a powerful validation of both the market and our strategy. We've built our platform for harsh, highly regulated environments where safety, security and data assurance are non-negotiable, and we're excited to work alongside AtkinsRéalis to help define the next generation of frontline digital operations.”

Optaric Guard enterprise smart glasses are built in a true safety glasses form factor and work with Optaric Link, software that connects the glasses to IT-managed iPhone and Android phones. The enterprise’s own apps, AI and data stay on systems it controls, with the glasses acting as the hands-free interface at the point of work.

AtkinsRéalis is a leading provider of digital solutions for the nuclear sector, focused on technologies that reduce risk and unlock safety, productivity and performance benefits across nuclear programmes. Its digital capabilities span robotics, AI-enabled platforms, extended reality, digital engineering and remote operations technologies. The collaboration with Optaric is the latest step in building an integrated digital ecosystem that connects people, data and technology to support the delivery of nuclear projects and operations across the lifecycle.
