THE LINE at NEOM presents a radical blueprint for how we can reimagine our urban spaces.
It aims to house 9 million people in a structure standing 500m tall, 200m wide, and stretching 170km into the Saudi Arabian desert.
THE LINE is already challenging our preconceptions about the way we're meant to house and transport ourselves, distribute essential services, and make use of renewable and regenerative local resources. Moreover, it invites us to question how a layer of inter-connected, AI-enabled technologies can be arranged to create the world's first cognitive smart-city.

What we are building
THE LINE's unorthodox dimensions are essential to its community vision.
Here city functions are layered vertically, rather than horizontally, meaning that essential services are never more than a 5-minute walk away. Communities will be car-free: high-speed rail line enables end-to-end transit in 20 minutes.
And in this sense, its impact could extend far beyond the 170km belt of land THE LINE is built on. THE LINE gives us a vital proving ground for responses to legacy infrastructure, pollution, traffic and human congestion – techniques which other governments may one day seek to implement themselves.

Its energy will be 100% renewable, meaning that solar, wind and hydrogen-based power generation systems all require integration into a single energy framework. Additional layers of infrastructure are embedded via smart technologies, with services continually optimized by AI.
